Stretching between the Tagus river and the coast, this region is an area of rolling hills that tumble down to rugged cliffs and sandy beaches. In contrast, along the banks of the Tagus is a vast alluvial plain. Some of the most impressive monuments in Portugal are located in this region recalling its importance in history. The walled town of Óbidos should not be missed, with its narrow streets of brightly white-washed houses and striking towers of the castle that’s now a splendid Pousada. The town of Leiria with its famous castle overlooking the city or the Mosteiro in Alcobaça are amongst the most magical places. An inviting trip to Peniche is recommended to explore the local active fishing port which has a dominating 16th century fort built for protection against marauding pirates. The Atlantic coast is a very popular holiday destination with sandy beaches and warm temperatures. Fatima, near Leiria, welcomes thousands of pilgrims each year to Portugal's most important religious shrine, scene of celebrated visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917.
