This Hotel Pousada is situated in the square in front of the Queluz National Palace, also known as The Portuguese Versailles, in Lisbon Portugal.
This beautiful Rococo Palace, which is open to visitors, was the summer residence of the Portuguese Royal Family during the 18th Century.
It was built by Dom Pedro III and was the home of Queen Maria I during the thirty nine years that she ruled Portugal until 1816.
During this period firework displays were held with the scenes reflected in the lakes. Bullfights were also held in the courtyard.
Unfortunately, Queen Maria is mainly remembered for being completely mad!
In the main palace, the mirror lined Throne Room is embellished within tricate ‘rocaille’ gilt carvings and the museum houses an important art collection, once owned by the royal family.
The formal gardens and its fountains, pergolas and lakes create an oasis of calm and are a perfect setting for viewing this magnificent building.
Queluz is within easy reach of Lisbon. It is 5 kilometers from the outskirts and 12 kms from the centre.
This elegant and exciting capital city on the River Tejo was rebuilt in the 18th Century following the Great Earthquake of 1755.
Lisbon has a wealth of museums, art galleries and historic monuments in particular, Torre de Belem, Jeronimos and the monument to the Discoveries.
