Estalagem Varanda dos Carqueijais is located in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the largest mountain range and the highest peak in continental Portugal.
Serra da Estrela rises to just under 2000 metres, it is topped by a small stone known as the Torre.
On the high slopes there is a modern ski resort and is the only place in Portugal you can ski and the only place where it snows regularly.
The region is notable for its tasty cheese, which is still made by hand and highly prized for its rich flavour.

It was one of the main towns in the kingdom. Many important Portuguese were born in the city or in the surrounding district. These persons played an important role during the major discoveries made by the Portuguese in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Estalagem Varanda dos Carqueijais is one of the only two hotels within the natural Park. It has fifty bedrooms all with private bathroom, central heating, direct dial telephone and satellite TV.
Restaurante "Cova da Beira" serves a wide variety of local dishes. There is also a bar for the guests.
There is an outdoor swimming pool for summer use and a tennis court. Special arrangements are available for guests staying at the Estalagem who wish to go skiing.
The Inn has facilities to hold meetings and private parking for residents. Lisbon airport is about 300 kms away and Oporto approximately 220 kms.
