Estalagem Varandas de Alter is located in Alter do Chao, a small historical village of the Alentejo region, which has as a symbol an ancient Roman bridge. Because it's sparsely populated this region is famous for its endless natural beauty.
This is a land where the finest bulls and horses roam peacefully in lush fields.
The Estalagem has a wide range of facilities offering all the commodities of a modern hotel.
Accommodation consists of 10 bedrooms and one suite. Room facilities include TV, mini bar, air conditioning and hair dryer. Six rooms have balcony overlooking the typical landscape of the Alentejo region.
The Estalagem has a restaurant serving local dishes. Due to its singularity the gastronomy in this area is appreciated in the rest of the country.
The area near the Estalagem is very quiet and peaceful, typical of this region which is known for its vast agricultural fields and warm climate.
Near Alter is the famous "Coudelaria de Alter", where you can take some wonderful walks, visit the Horse Museum or admire the pure breed "Cavalo Lusitano".
Portalegre is the market centre of the region, with beautiful manors and white-washed houses. Its fine ancient tapestries are a flourishing industry, known throughout the art world.
There are also many monuments and buildings, mainly from the Renascence period, that used to belong to the monarchy and are truly worth visiting. Amongst these are several churches, a 14th century castle, a fountain and the Igreja da Misericordia dated from the 18th century.
Other points of interest include some pre-historic monuments and Roman roads. Just 12 kms south of Alter do Chao is the Spa in Cabeco de Vide.
The Estalagem has a restaurant with capacity for 150 persons, a bar with panoramic views and a beautiful swimming pool.
